Not everyone is adventurous when it comes to food, let alone children. Trying new things can be scary, especially when you don't have much practice at it.
That's what New Food Fridays are about. There's nothing special about Friday, it's just what I picked, and it has a nice ring to it. The point is to have a predictable time each week where the whole family tries something that is not part of the usual kitchen rotation.
chicken skewers w/ peanut dipping sauce
tuna salad on crackers
It's not part of your meal, it's just one plate out in the middle, and everybody takes a bite and shares what they think, good or bad. The purpose isn't to make your kids like everything (like we could), it's to show them that trying new things can be fun, and nothing bad will happen if they don't like it.
Try to avoid things that are overly sweet, since that doesn't provide much of a challenge. But try to make it tasty, and if possible, not too weird to look at it.
Encourage them and make it fun! If you don't like it, feel free to scrunch up your face and not go back for seconds. Again, we are reinforcing that nothing terrible will happen if you chew and swallow one bite of something you don't care for. And if you roll your eyes back into your head, go limp and slide of your chair with either disgust or delight, it just makes it that much more enjoyable.
Give it a try and let us know how it goes!
