I recently read about something that makes my heart glad. There is a new phenomenon popping up called Teen MOPS, which at first glance, might appear to be a support group for parents of teens who are behaving like preschoolers. (We might need that one, too.) But alas, this is much better!
Teen MOPS is a division of MOPS International that focuses on the needs of teenage mothers. Currently, there are nearly 100 teen groups around the country. How wonderful is that?!? Regardless of the circumstances of how a teen becomes a parent, it should be our response to honor her choice to protect life, and take on one of the most all-encompassing responsibilities she will ever face. She may be trying to finish high school, or support herself and her child without the help of her own family. She may still feel like a child herself. Hard, hard stuff.
I wish I could assign a mentor to all new parents, let alone single, young ones. Teen MOPS is such a Jesus-y response, in my opinion, to a sad but very real epidemic in our culture. To reach out in compassion and serve a teen mom, rather than distance ourselves by pointing out her sin and hiding behind our own. It makes my heart squeeze. I hope I get the opportunity to volunteer or speak at one of these groups someday!
