Our next pair on our More or Less list is regarding the buzzkill of all creative, spontaneous type parents...structure.
MORE STRUCTURE TO THE DAY
Generally speaking, young kids interpret structure as safety. Imagine having virtually NO say in how each day of your life unfolds. Wouldn't you at least want to have an idea of what is coming next? At least you could get your head around it, especially the parts that aren't your favorite. Then you can also look forward to the parts you enjoy! Don't you take comfort in knowing when bedtime is, that you can count on some adult time with your favorite show and snacks from your hidden stash?
Because children have so little control, they thrive on having information! In fact, a list posted somewhere with the basic order of normal days is something they enjoy. Not convinced yet? Check out your nearest kindergarten classroom. It is signs, lists, and charts on every wall.
Remember, we are talking about the importance of order and routine, not a time schedule. The more predictable their lives are, the less anxiety and stress is in their little bodies, and the better their brains and bodies can develop. So protect your family dinner time, bedtime routines, Friday treat days, and after-dinner games.
